Grace House’s Mission

Grace House Summer Program

Direct Services. In a typical year, we provide emergency help to 35 families with utility or heating bills; 17 individuals get medical/dental care or glasses and prescriptions; others are able to pay rent.

Resource/Information Center. Grace House staff write grant applications to fund water hookups to county water for local families and work to link people with resources and agencies for other vital services.

Community Outreach. Grace House staff provides transportation to hospitals, stores, and doctors, and delivers Thanksgiving dinner to the home-bound.

Summer Service-Learning Retreats. Our program brings 150-200 people, mostly from colleges and universities, to Southwestern Virginia each summer for a variety of educational and service experiences. Participants repair roofs, rotten steps and porches, replace ceilings and gutters, clean and paint homes, build storage sheds or handicap ramps for families struggling with poverty or physical disabilities. Participants leave the experience inspired and spiritually enriched. Most participating colleges send groups back every summer.

All aid is provided regardless of the religious affiliation of the recipients.
